Retrograde Motion

Retrograde motion is the apparent backward motion of a planet as observed from Earth. The use of epicycles effectively simulated these looping or backwards movements as the combined motion of circles rather than a single, simple orbit.

Epicycles and Deferents

Ptolemy introduced epicycles (small circles) and deferents (larger circles on which the centers of epicycles move) to account for the discrepancies between the simple circular motions predicted by uniform circular motion and the actual observed paths of the planets. This system allowed him to model the complex movements, including variations in speed and direction, more accurately.

Uniform Circular Motion

This concept is the ancient philosophical idea that celestial bodies must move in perfect circles at a constant speed because the circle was considered the most perfect shape. Ptolemy, like many of his predecessors, assumed that the heavens were governed by uniform circular motion, a notion that influenced the structure of his planetary models.

Geocentric Model

The geocentric model places Earth at the center of the universe, with all celestial bodies, including the planets, orbiting it. Since the observed motions of the planets did not fit neatly into a single circular orbit around Earth, the geocentric framework needed additional corrective mechanisms.
