Electron Configuration

Electron configuration is a method of describing how electrons are distributed among the orbitals of an atom. It follows a set of rules including the Aufbau principle, which states that orbitals are filled from lower to higher energy, as well as the Pauli exclusion principle and Hund's rule. This configuration provides detailed insight into the atom’s electronic structure and is fundamental for predicting chemical behavior.

Valence Electrons

Valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost shell of an atom that are involved in chemical bonding and reactivity. They determine many of the chemical properties of an element by participating in the formation of chemical bonds and by influencing the element's placement within the periodic table.

Core Electrons

Core electrons are all the electrons in an atom that reside in the inner shells beneath the valence shell. These electrons mainly shield the nuclear charge and do not typically participate in chemical bonding, thus playing a less active role in chemical reactions than the valence electrons.
