In this video, we're going to be focusing on the nomenclature of ethers.

So again, if you don't know what an ether is, let's remind ourselves, ether is a type of organic compound characterized by an oxygen with two alky groups on the side.

And these alky groups can be identical or they can be different.

If they're identical, that means that they are something called a symmetrical ether, which makes sense.

And if they are different, then they're going to be called an unsymmetrical ether.

So let me go over the nomenclature of both.

So if you have a symmetrical ether, what you're going to do when you name it is you're going to first identify the alka group and then just add a dye before whatever alka group that you have identified, and then just add the word ether after that.

For an unsymmetrical, for an unsymmetrical, ether, you want to identify the alka groups on either side, and then you are going to name them in order of in order of alphabetical priority.

So, for example, we have, let's say, a compound like this.

So this is an ethyl group, and then this is a methyl group.

So how you want to name this, is because e comes before m in the alphabet you want to do you want to name this as ethyl methyl ether and then let's go over some examples on the right here so let me erase this real quick all right so let's start with the first one how are we how are we going to name this one so the first step is is this a unsymmetrical or symmetrical ether this one's going to be an unsymmetrical ether because the alco groups on both sides are different.

So on the left here we have an aflo group and then on the right if you don't remember this, this is a propyl but because we have a carbon bonded to a hydrogen and then we have two methyl groups coming out.

This is called an isopropyl group.

And if you don't remember the prefix iso, it's the only prefix that you have to also take into account when you alphabetize the alco groups.

But since ethyl comes before iso, this would be ethyl isopropyl ether.
