In the first century AD, when Iraneus was 18-20 years old, he witnessed the public execution of most of the people of his village. As
bishop, he and others saw the diversity of early Christian sects as a danger to its survival. Iraneus thus divided Christians into two
categories: one he called "Blank 1," which means "straight thinking," and those who did not agree with his view of Christianity he
labeled "heterodox."
