In the second situation she asks the class, what should the scale read? (Assume that the object is the same in both situation, and that there is no acceleration (the scale is at equilibrium). Three of her students offer the following statements.
Brenda: In situation 2, the scale reads 0 because it is being pulled left and right by the same amount and force is a vector so they cancel out.
Carlos: In situation 2, the scale should read 20N because there are 2 objects and so each is being pulled at 10N resulting in a force of 20N down.
Javon: In situation 2, the scale should read 10N because if we zoom in on just one of the objects, then it looks just like situation 1. All we are doing is changing the position of the force sensor.
State which is right and what is wrong with the other statements.
