Assignments
1. For the first assignment, consider the grid to be ideal, so $Z_{grid} = 0$. We use an electric furnace,
which consists of 3 identical cooking plates with an impedance of R + jX. For proper operation
each cooking plate should be connected to a 231V supply.
a. How can you connect the furnace to each of the three given power supplies (1x231V, 3x231V
and 3x400V)? Draw the circuit diagrams for each situation and indicate the line voltages and
phase voltages, line currents and phase currents in these schemes.
$R = 25$
$X = 12,5$

b. Measure for each circuit the values for the line voltage and phase voltage, line current and
phase current and represent them in a table.
c. Using the results of question b, what is (are) the current(s) that is (are) delivered by the
power source, for each supply system. Compare the three systems. Explain the causes of the
observed differences. What is the technical and/or economical advantage of the preferred
system?
d. For the three systems, measure the active power in each cooking plate. Using these results,
how long will it take to boil 1l of water, from 25°C?
