Background: You are a nurse working for the Australian Red Cross who has been deployed to Epau Village in Vanuatu, immediately after a cyclone that has devastated the community. Vanuatu is prone to climate change natural disasters which threaten the communities’ livelihoods, destroy homes and essential infrastructure. Epau Village is deeply rooted in cultural traditions, where storytelling, song, dance, and various art forms are integral to daily life. Christianity, primarily Presbyterian, shapes the spiritual landscape. The community's socioeconomic status is lower middle income, relying heavily on agriculture, farming, fishing, and tourism. The small local village First Aid base, run by 2 First Aid officers, is overwhelmed and Epau Village is cut off from essential services due to severe road damage. The church and school are the two strongest structures remaining in the village and are currently being used for the community to receive first aid. The aftermath of the cyclone has raised concerns about sanitation, contaminated water sources, and the looming threat of waterborne diseases. The community has run out of clean drinking water and lacks understanding about how to prevent waterborne diseases. Your Health Promotion Project will aim to implement measures to provide clean drinking water to the community and educate Epau Village members on how to improve their water quality and recognise signs of contamination and waterborne diseases. Discuss why this health issue is a concern in your target population and the outcomes for the community members if the issue is not addressed.
