1. Antigen Presentation: Infected or abnormal cells present antigens on their surface using major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules.

2. Recognition by T Cells: T cells, particularly cytotoxic T cells (CD8+ T cells), recognize these antigens as foreign.

3. Activation of T Cells: T cells get activated when they bind to the antigen-MHC complex. This is often assisted by helper T cells (CD4+ T cells) which release cytokines to help in the activation process.

4. Destruction of Infected Cells: Activated cytotoxic T cells directly attack and destroy infected cells by releasing perforins and granzymes. Perforins create pores in the target cell membrane, while granzymes induce apoptosis (programmed cell death).

5. Memory Formation: Similarly to the humoral response, memory T cells remain in the body to ensure a quicker and more vigorous response in case of re-infection by the same pathogen.
