How does the fossil record help support the theory of evolution? Fossils are the remains of ancient organisms (plants or animals). Fossils can be in the form of entire organisms (bones) or imprints of an organism. By examining the fossil record, scientists can map out organisms that are related to each other. The map can show the evolution of an organism, how the organism changes over time. Scientists look for connections between organisms by examining similar features. If two organisms share similar structures (homologous structures) then they are related.
