You've been paying attention in your developmental biology class even though Zoom lectures are starting to get old. Anyway, the professor has talked about cell-cell contacts, so you know something about a particular type of cell-cell contact. Being the self-confident student that you are, you set about to do some thought experiments. While you idle away the hours, you start to daydream about two cells that are attached to each other through what seems like a bazillion little hooks and loops – sort of like Velcro – but they're really easy to pull apart. Yet, when you pull them apart, you notice that one cell is destroyed in the process, and the other seems to have a blob of stuff on it where it used to be attached to the other cell. What might these little hooks and loops you imagined in your thought experiment represent in the two cells?
1a.) What might these little hooks and loops you imagined in your thought experiment represent in the two cells?
1b.) What explanation could you propose for why the cells could be easily pulled apart despite the bazillion hooks and loops?
1c.) Why do you think one cell was destroyed, but the other survived, yet it had that blob on it? What technique could you use to confirm/refute your hypothesis?
