We're going to talk a little bit about energy extraction today.

Energy is removed from the nutrients that we eat.

It's stored there, and we can remove that through a process called catabolism.

Catabolism, i kind of think of it as cannibalism, right? we're eating something.

Catabolism extracts energy from food, from the kilocalories in that food.

And this is to be contrasted with an abelism, which is actually the creation of molecules.

Catabolism is the destruction of molecules that tearing apart and extracting energy.

That absorption of nutrients typically results in a kind of a 50 -50 split.

We get atp out of catabolism, but we also get heat is a byproduct, and that's why our body is warm like it is.

To do this process, oxygen is used in a cell structure.

So atp comes from a cell structure, commonly kind of quickly drawn, as a double membrane structure called the mitochondria.

Mitochondria, to create atp from the nutrients, actually consume oxygen and excretes some.

So kind of logically if i'm going to create more atp, which means i'm going to consume more energy, i'm going to start burning more calories, that means i have to consume more oxygen, the greater the amount of o2 being used.

And that's one way we can look at someone's metabolism is are they has the metabolism gone up or down, we can measure the amount of oxygen they are consuming.

So when you increase exercise, you're consuming more oxygen.
