A 7-year-old boy is brought into emergency after collapsing at school. His pulse is shallow, irregular, and rapid (100 beats per minute) . His breathing is rapid, too. A blood work up shows a blood pH of 7.3, and the presence of large amounts of ketones and glucose. Body temperature is normal. The child is very thin.
