Sample Problems: A liver biopsy of a boy indicate a deficiency of fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase activity. The boy's blood glucose levels were normal at a beginning of a fast but decreased precipitously. Pyruvate and alanine levels increased and the glyceraldehyde-3phosphate/dihydroxyacetone phosphate ratio increased as well. Why did these symptoms occur? If the oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate via the pentose phosphate pathway were being used primarily to generate NADPH for biosynthesis, the other product, ribose-5-phosphate, would accumulate. What problems might this cause? Many bacterial species can carry out the reactions of gluconeogenesis. Would you expect to find the gluconeogenic enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase in such bacteria? Why or why not?
