A charged particle is moving In a circle under the influence of a uniform magnetic field. If an electric field that points in the same direction as the magnetic field is turned on, describe the path the charged particle will take
Added by Melissa D.
Step 1
Before the electric field is introduced, the charged particle is moving in a circle due to the Lorentz force exerted by the magnetic field. The magnetic force is perpendicular to the velocity of the particle and to the magnetic field, causing the particle to move Show more…

Explain what will be the path of a charged particle moving in a uniform magnetic field at an arbitrary angle? What if it moves through both electric and magnetic field at the same time? Support your answer with diagrams.

The magnetic force on a moving charged particle is perpendicular to the velocity of the particle. In a region of uniform magnetic field, the charged particle therefore undergoes circular motion, with the magnetic force providing the centripetal force. Show that the momentum of a particle of charge q in a region of uniform magnetic field B can be determined by measuring the radius R of the circular orbit. Uniform magnetic field into the page: What direction and of what magnitude would a uniform electric field need to be applied so that the charged particle would move in a straight line?
You're looking down on a positively charged particle moving in a clockwise circle. In what direction is the resulting magnetic moment? What if it's a negatively charged particle moving in the same direction?
