Question

3. A dog pants as it lies in the hot summer sun, releasing excess body heat to the environment and lowering its body temperature to its stable state. 4. A bull on the edge of a herd of cattle panics when it hears a loud noise and begins to run. Five nearby cattle sense the panic and also begin to run. This causes another 15 cattle to panic. Eventually, all 100 cattle in the herd panic and stampede. 5. You invest $1,000 in a savings account and reinvest the 5% interest you earn. The interest makes the amount of money in the account larger, so it earns even more interest. After 20 years, the account contains more than $2,600 and is still growing. 6. When blood sugar levels rise after eating a meal, the pancreas releases the hormone insulin, stimulating cells to take up sugar from the blood. When blood sugar levels drop, the pancreas releases another hormone to stop sugar uptake by cells.

case-1-your-stomach-starts-grumbling-during-your-anatomy-and-physiology-lecture-as-soon-as-class-is-over-you-decide-to-hit-the-snack-area-you-see-your-favorite-candy-bar-in-one-of-the-snack-04362

Case #1: Your stomach starts grumbling during your Anatomy and Physiology lecture. As soon as class is over, you decide to hit the snack area. You see your favorite candy bar in one of the snack machines and you cannot resist. Your blood glucose level before eating this snack is 90 mg/100 ml (normal). As you digest and then absorb the sugar in the candy, the level of glucose in your blood increases to 120 mg/100 ml. The increased level of glucose is detected by receptors on pancreatic beta cells. These receptors send a signal into the beta cells, informing them of the excessive glucose in the blood. The pancreatic beta cells release insulin. The insulin travels through the blood and stimulates the liver and body cells. The liver and body cells remove the extra glucose from the blood, reducing your blood glucose back to its original level of 90 mg/100 ml. At this point, release of insulin stops. 1. What is the stimulus of this control loop? 2. What is the control center? 3. What is the effector? 4. In this feedback mechanism, insulin is acting as: A) receptor b) afferent pathway c) efferent pathway 5. This is an example of (positive / negative) feedback. How could you tell? Case #2: A woman is in labor. The size of the fetus combined with the contractions of the uterine muscular layer stretches the uterine wall, stimulating stretch receptors in the cervix. Signals from these receptors are conducted through nerves to the hypothalamus/posterior pituitary. The hypothalamus/posterior pituitary releases oxytocin. The oxytocin travels through the blood and stimulates the smooth muscle layer of the uterus. Oxytocin has two effects on the uterine smooth muscle: 1. It directly stimulates the smooth muscle to contract more frequently and more forcefully. 2. It causes the uterine wall to release prostaglandins, which increase the frequency and force of the contractions even more. These effects push the fetus more forcefully into the cervix, stimulating the stretch receptors further. The receptors send additional impulses to the hypothalamus/posterior pituitary. The increased activation of the hypothalamus/posterior pituitary stimulates the release of additional oxytocin, which further stimulates the uterus. This cycle of activation continues until the fetus is expelled from the uterus. 1. What is the stimulus of this control loop? 2. What is the control center? 3. What is the effector? 4. This is an example of (positive / negative) feedback. How could you tell?

later-monday-afternoon-detective-sam-garrison-returned-to-police-headquarters-and-after-reading-the-medical-examiners-complete-report-began-the-process-of-writing-his-own-explanation-of-what-76332

Later Monday Afternoon Detective Sam Garrison returned to police headquarters and, after reading the medical examiner’s complete report, began the process of writing his own explanation of what happened to the Underhills. As he wrote, he thought about all that had happened and began to wonder about the physiology associated with the couple’s death. From the lung autopsy analysis, it was clear the Underhills were still breathing and alive when they went under water. This suggests that they became unconscious in the hot tub and subsequently drowned. The level of alcohol found by the medical examiner was high but was not necessarily sufficient to cause their death, but was it a contributing factor? Sam knew that nitroglycerin could cause low blood pressure and that both alcohol and heat would reduce blood pressure, but he was unsure of the mechanism. He also wondered whether the furosemide found on the night table was involved in this hot tub mystery. Question 8 (10 points) If the paramedics had found the Underhills still alive despite their low blood pressure, which of the following medication could have been used to save them and why? Pilocarpine, a muscarinic agonist, which would activate muscarinic receptors on arterioles and therefore dilate arterioles. Epipen, which delivers epinephrine, would stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors on the heart and therefore increase cardiac output. Viagra® (sildenafil citrate), which would increase the local production of nitric oxide and therefore decrease total peripheral resistance. Acebutolol, a beta-blocker, which would antagonize beta-adrenergic receptors on arterioles and therefore constrict arterioles. Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic (or “water pill”), which would increase urine output and therefore restore blood volume to normal.

in-the-laboratory-unlabeled-coenzyme-a-and-radioactive-14c-palmitate-are-added-to-a-homogenate-of-liver-cells-which-you-can-assume-is-able-to-carry-out-all-the-reactions-of-cellular-metaboli-54824

In the laboratory, unlabeled Coenzyme A and radioactive [14C] palmitate are added to a homogenate of liver cells (which you can assume is able to carry out all the reactions of cellular metabolism). The cells are allowed to incubate for a while, then the cells are broken open, and the cytosolic portion is separated from the mitochondrial portion. The two portions are assayed for the presence of radioactive acetyl CoA. Where would the label occur, and in what proportions? In the cytosol and mitochondria both; more in the cytosol than in the mitochondria In the mitochondria only In the cytosol only In the cytosol and mitochondria both; in equal proportions In the cytosol and mitochondria both; more in the mitochondria In adipocytes, glucagon initiates signaling through a G-protein coupled receptor that activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which then phosphorylates monoacylglycerol lipase. True False The largest energy store in a well-nourished human is: Triacylglycerols in adipose tissue Blood glucose ATP in tissue Liver glycogen Muscle glycogen Which one of the statements below is NOT a function of ketone body metabolism? Provide a source of energy for muscles. Regenerate CoA in mitochondria. Provide a source of energy for the liver. Allow β-oxidation to continue. Provide a source of energy for the brain. In adipocytes, glucagon initiates signaling through a G-protein coupled receptor that activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which then phosphorylates perilipin. True False In adipocytes, glucagon initiates signaling through a G-protein coupled receptor that activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which then phosphorylates CGI-58. True False In adipocytes, glucagon initiates signaling through a G-protein coupled receptor that activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which then phosphorylates hormone-sensitive lipase. True False Which protein/complex(s) carries out a reaction that reduces NAD+? Enoyl-CoA Hydratase β-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase Acyl-CoA acetyltransferase (thiolase) All are correct In adipocytes, glucagon initiates signaling through a G-protein coupled receptor that activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which then phosphorylates fatty acyl-CoA synthetase. True False In adipocytes, glucagon initiates signaling through a G-protein coupled receptor that activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which then phosphorylates adipose triacylglycerol lipase. True False

00:01 In the question, we are given the case and the case 1 is, in the case 1, we have the stimulus, we have the stimulus and the stimulus in this control loop is increased level of glucose.
00:17 Stimulus in this case is increased level of glucose or we can say blood sugar, blood sugar in blood.
00:28 This is the stimulus because the blood sugar in this case rose to, blood sugar in this case rose to 120 mg per 100 ml after eating the candy bar and the control center in this case and the control center in this case is pancreatic beta cells.
00:53 Pancreatic beta cells are the control center in this case as they look after the stimulus that is increased in the blood sugar levels and these pancreatic beta cells detect glucose levels, detect glucose levels and trigger the release of, trigger the release of insulin and trigger the release of insulin.
01:27 For the next part, the effector, the effector in this case are the liver and body cells.
01:36 The effector in this case is liver and body cells because they respond to the insulin, they respond to insulin by removing, by removing extra glucose from the blood, extra glucose from blood.
02:03 In this feedback mechanism, insulin is acting as efferent pathway, insulin is acting as efferent pathway because it is carrying the signals to the cells, it is carrying the signals to the cells to take the action and this case is an example of, this case is an example of negative feedback, this case is an example of negative feedback because in this case the response, the response counteracts, the response counteracts initial stimulus, response counteracts initial stimulus that is high blood glucose, that is high blood glucose and brings the system and brings the system back to normal point, brings the system back to normal point that is 90 mg per 100 ml of blood.
03:17 So this is the answer to the case.
03:21 Now we have the case 2, we have case 2.
03:26 In the case 2, here the stimulus is, in the case 2, the stimulus is stretching of uterine ball due to size of fetus, due to size of fetus and contractions...
