Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down starches into simple sugars in your mouth. A mutation occurs in the gene for amylase that results in a glycine residue (a small nonpolar amino acid) being substituted for a serine (a a small polar amino acid). Based on this information only, do you think that the mutant amylase will function similarly to the normal amylase?

Step 1
The mutation changes a serine (small, polar) to a glycine (small, nonpolar). Both are small amino acids, but serine has a polar side chain capable of forming hydrogen bonds, while glycine is nonpolar and more flexible due to its minimal side chain (a single Show more…

Lysozyme is an enzyme that breaks down bacterial cell walls and is found in your tears, mucus, and saliva. A mutation occurs in the gene for lysozyme that results in a lysine (a positively charged amino acid) being substituted for an arginine (also a positively charged amino acid). Do you think that the mutant lysozyme will function similarly to the normal lysozyme? Explain why or why not?

Assume the amino acid sequence provided below is for amylase, the enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of starch into sugars. [7 marks] 5' - Met - Pro - Arg - Lys - Ala - Phe - STOP - 3' a) What sort of changes in the nucleotides can cause a frameshift mutation? Describe the impact of a frameshift mutation on the amino acid strand. [/3] b) Given the amino acid sequence above, create a possible frameshift mutation. Show the DNA coding and template strands, the mRNA strand and the resulting polypeptide chain. Underline & bold where you have inserted your mutation. [/4]

The secondary structure of a protein consists of a single long beta sheet. The outer edges of the beta sheet are composed of serine and proline amino acids. Explain how the structure of amino acids determine the function. A mutation occurred in DNA of a globular enzyme. If the serine amino acids were found within the active site of the enzyme, describe the effect this change is likely to have on enzymatic function. If a mutation in the DNA of a globular enzyme changed all of the serine and proline amino acids to glycine, predict how the relative position of the amino acid on the secondary structure of the beta sheet would be affected when the protein is placed in an aqueous solution. Justify your prediction by providing evidence that supports your claim.
