Seals can remain underwater without breathing for nearly 45 minutes as they hunt for fish. How would a biologist explain the evolution of diving long periods without breathing, assuming that seal ancestors could stay underwater for just a couple of minutes? There was a need to hold one's breath longer to successfully catch food. Therefore, each following generation, the population of seals who could hold their breath longer increased.
