Animals and plants are both very successful kingdoms in evolutionary terms (number of species). Describe four challenges faced by both plants and vertebrate animals had when moving from an aquatic environment to a land environment. Describe the strategies and adaptations plants and vertebrate animals use/must overcome these challenges.

Step 1
Four key, shared challenges are: 1) avoiding desiccation and maintaining water balance; 2) supporting the body against gravity and anchoring/moving on a solid substrate; 3) exchanging gases (O2 and CO2) efficiently in air without excessive water loss; 4) Show more…

A major evolutionary challenge, for both plants and animals, was the colonization of land. Thinking about these challenges for both groups, please answer the questions below: A. What are two similar challenges faced by both plants and animals? For each challenge please give an adaptation found in each group, plants and animals, evolved to deal with these challenges. (4 points) B. We think plants colonized land in one evolutionary event, but we also think this happened multiple times in animals. What major animal phyla did we discuss were able to successfully colonize land? (3 points) C. For two of the phyla you used to answer part B, give a pre-adaptation that assisted this group in colonizing land and mention how it was useful. Can you think of a pre-adpatation in plants that helped them colonize land? (3 points) A) Desiccation Plants: Waxy cuticles and stomata Animals: B) Arthropods C)

Life made the transition from water to land many times. Explain how vertebrates met the three main challenges to the transition to land. Draw connections (or make comparisons) between how vertebrates and plants adapted to land. You can discuss similarities and/or differences in their adaptations to life on land
Land plants and land animals are each derived from aquatic ancestors and therefore, these groups had similar challenges to overcome in order to thrive on land. Briefly state two challenges of life on land that plants and animals had to overcome in their transition from life in the water to life on land.
