ATP synthase attaches a phosphate group to ADP, forming ATP. This process requires energy. The energy is provided by electron carrier molecules in the electron transport system that pump protons (H+ ions) into the intermembrane space (also called outer compartment). When these move back into the mitochondrial matrix, they must move through ATP synthase. This movement through ATP synthase provides the power needed by ATP synthase to push the third phosphate group onto ADP.

The electron transport chain works together with something called ATP synthase, a complex enzyme in the inner membrane that builds ATP from ADP. i. What moves through the ATP synthase to drive ATP production? ii. Consider the thing you named in the previous question. Where do these things come from? iii. Consider the thing you named in part i. What "makes" these things move through ATP synthase?

During oxidative phosphorylation of cell respiration, H+ ions move through the membrane pumping electrons from one side of the membrane to the other. ATP is synthesized when H+ ions move through a protein channel provided by ATP synthase. ATP pushes electrons through membrane carriers creating a H+ ion gradient. a concentration gradient is generated when large numbers of H+ ions passively diffuse from the matrix of the mitochondrion to the mitochondrion's intermembrane space. a phosphate is transferred from an organic molecule to ADP.
