A veterinarian was seen at the doctor's office for an abscess that formed on his hand, after administering a vaccine to some cattle. A culture was collected and sent to the laboratory. The results are as follows:
Direct gram stain = mod WBC's, few g+r, rare g+c
Culture Blood agar = large opaque, white to gray, raised, comma shaped non-hemolytic. (35 C) Broth = produces heavy pellicle, with little subsurface growth. Gram stain = large square ended, non-motile rod, with an ellipsoidal to cylindrical centrally located spore, gives bamboo appearance. Secondary testing = Carbohydrate fermentation - glucose, fructose, maltose, sucrose, and trehalose fermented.
Gelatin - inverted pine tree growth
Nitrates - positive
VP - positive
String of pearls - positive Penicillin is the drug of choice.
