Transgenic papayas are special because they contain a certain gene that makes the papayas resistant to the Ring Spot Virus. The world first came into contact with the Ring Spot Virus in 1992 in Puna, Hawaii. Six years went by, and finally, a variety of the plant that is transgenic virus repellent. During these six years, the production of fresh fruit dropped from 95% to less than 78%. These crops not only fend off the virus, but they also amplify how fast these GMO fruits grow. In 1996, 4.3 million crops were planted, and now in the 2000s, it is up to 109 million crops grown. "While the affluent nations can certainly afford to pay more for food produced by the so-called organic methods, the one billion chronically undernourished people of the low-income, food-deficit nations cannot." -- Dr. Norman Borlaug, Nobel-Prize-winning agriculturalist and father of the Green Revolution." Even a Nobel Prize winner is understanding how much good these GMO crops can do for the world. Even though GMO crops have had a couple of negative tests, I honestly believe that the pros outweigh the cons by far because you have to think about what we and these third-world countries will benefit from.
