This program was designed to address the prevalent issues of teen parenthood and poverty. The idea was to introduce and reinforce the importance of obtaining a post secondary education to teen mothers in their junior or senior year of high school. The program ran for eight weeks during the summer of 2003. Participants met once a week to participate in group building activities, get insights to what it will take to finish school, and receive information on services that are available to help them along the way. The young women also had the opportunity to tour the UW and MATC campuses. The participants walked away from the program with a sense of hope that they are able to pursue their dreams despite their difficult situations. (Angela Cunningham and Sherrill Sellers)

The project that I have in mind was working with the youth as they exit out of foster care and provide them with the essential skills that they will need to be self sufficient adults. However, I'm having a hard time locating grants/RFP that align with my project. Therefore, I have modified my project slightly to focus on homeless youth. I will still provide all of the services as in my previous plan, but focus on those on the homeless population and working to provide stable housing. As part of my project we would provide services that would ensure that youth have their GED, access to FASFA and higher education programs, and employment services. This program works to help the population of under served communities. FR-6700-N-35 Youth Homeless Demonstration Program- This program is a community approach to ending teen homelessness. My goal is to work to put programs in place that will provide teens tools that will prevent them from becoming homeless, and continuing services to sustain their independence. The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), a Blueprints-certified Model Program (http://www.blueprintsprograms.com/factsheet/nurse-family-partnership), is a selective-level preventive intervention targeted to low-income, first-time mothers and their babies. It begins during pregnancy and continues through the child's second birthday. Nurses make home visits to pregnant mothers to improve the outcomes of pregnancy, improve infant health and development, and improve the mother's life-course development. NFP has consistently demonstrated long-term benefits for both mothers and babies based on RCTs conducted among different racial/ethnic groups in different cities, states, and countries. One major RCT tested the program in the public system of obstetric and pediatric care in Memphis, Tennessee. Investigators randomly assigned approximately 1/3 of a large group of pregnant, mostly black women to receive the full NFP intervention with home visits, and 2/3 of the group to TAU (treatment as usual), which consisted of routine prenatal care and well-baby services. Mothers and children were followed up at 3 years, 9 years, and 12 years after the birth. At the 12-year follow-up, investigators interviewed 180 first-born children of the home visited mothers and 398 children of the TAU mothers.
