Cell membrane bilayers consist of three types of lipids. Phospholipid is one type of membrane lipid and has two varieties: one consists of two fatty acids and either a polar or charged group attached to glycerol. The other type of membrane lipid is derived from sphingosine and has a fatty acid attached to the amino group and phosphorylcholine or phosphoethanolamine attached to the hydroxyl group. It differs from phospholipids in that it has a sugar attached to the hydroxyl group. The regulation of membrane bilayer fluidity comes from the precursor for the steroid hormone signaling molecules.
