Chemotherapy Complete the following statements to describe how chemotherapy may be used to treat cancer. Not all choices will be used. While ____ is localized therapy, chemotherapy treats the entire body to catch cancer cells that have spread from the original cancerous location. Most chemotherapeutic drugs kill cells by damaging the ____ or interfering with its synthesis. Medications that interfere by blocking DNA replication are called _____ Medications that block enzyme production are called _____ Medications that block enzymes, cell division, and cell membranes are called _____ Medications that interfere with cell division or prevent enzymes needed for cell replication are called _____ Medications that prevent enzymes from repairing DNA are called _____ enzymes plasma membrane alkylating agents DNA diet antitumor antibiotics mitotic inhibitors nitrosoureas antimetabolites radiation

New advances in cancer treatment Complete the following statements regarding new advances in the treatment of cancer. Not all choices will be used. In addition to traditional surgery, radiation, and chemotherapies, newer therapies are in clinical ________ with hopes that they will be effective in treating cancer. Immunotherapy treats the failure of the immune system to remove foreign cancer cells and may include using ________ to target cancer cells directly. Another form of immunotherapy uses genetically engineered immune cells to produce ________ that stimulate the body to attack tumors. ________ immunotherapy links monoclonal antibodies to radioactive isotopes or chemotherapeutic drugs. Gene therapy using the p53 gene to trigger ________ in engineered adenoviruses has been found to kill only tumor cells and not healthy cells within the body. antibiotics cell lysis vaccines use apoptosis cytokines Active Passive trials

One way to cure cancer is for patients to take chemotherapy drugs such as vincristine and colchicine. These cancer drugs disrupt mitosis by binding to tubulin (the subunit of microtubules) and interfering with microtubule assembly and disassembly. Exactly what mitotic structure is targeted by these drugs? What effect would they have on cell division? How does their action cure cancer?
