Some enzymes can be inhibited by heavy metal ions such as $\mathrm{Hg}^{2+}$ and $\mathrm{Pb}^{2+}$. These metal ions have a large affinity for sulfur-containing groups and can react with molecules such as $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{SH}$ to form compounds such as $\mathrm{Pb}\left(\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{~S}\right)_{2} .$ Based on the structures of the amino acids given in Table $10.8(\leftarrow$ Sec. $10-7 d),$ suggest at least one amino acid that is likely to be present in enzymes that are inhibited by heavy metals.
