In this video, we are going to talk about a very hot topic, diversity and inclusion in the classroom, specifically through anecdotal experience.
00:15
So my experience consists of teaching high school chemistry at a title i high school in florida.
00:23
So in order to build a diverse, inclusive curriculum as a teacher, the number one thing i focused on was exposure, exposing the students to what was happening in the field of chemistry within their local community.
00:44
So by people who grew up in miami where i was teaching, people who have roots in miami and who either stayed in miami or went elsewhere and built careers out of science.
00:57
With the idea that this would motivate people to see the relevance of science because they weren't necessarily exposed to it in their community.
01:06
The other thing that i focused on was context.
01:11
Being aware that i'm teaching a chemistry curriculum in the context of, for the purposes of my school, there was a very low retention rate of teachers.
01:21
And so a lot of students hadn't had math teachers year after year, which was appalling.
01:25
There were a lot of issues in the district in terms of resources and availability of staff and so on...
