Discuss why signs and symptoms of deficiencies of water-soluble vitamins appear periorally.
Added by Kathryn L.
Step 1
Water-soluble vitamins (such as B-complex vitamins and vitamin C) are not stored extensively in the body and need to be regularly replenished through diet. Their deficiency quickly affects tissues with high metabolic activity and rapid cell turnover. Show more…

Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water, and excess intake is generally excreted. Fortification of foods in the United States has reduced the incidence of deficiencies for many of these vitamins, but inadequate intake is still possible. Toxicity is less likely since these vitamins are not stored in the body, but excessive intake can still cause undesirable symptoms in some cases. Match the words in the left column to the appropriate blanks in the sentences on the right. vitamin B6 vitamin B12 niacin folate thiamin vitamin C pantothenic acid 1. Insufficient intake of vitamins and minerals can result in a variety of deficiency diseases. Match each micronutrient with its deficiency. Anemia characterized by many large red blood cells in the bloodstream despite adequate folate intake can lead to nerve degeneration, paralysis, and death. Initial symptoms include weakness and loss of appetite, followed by poor coordination and dementia, diarrhea, severe edema, and dermatitis. Weakness, slow wound healing, bone pain, bleeding gums, and pinpoint hemorrhages on the skin are also common symptoms. Thiamin. Riboflavin. Niacin. Vitamin C. Vitamin B-12.
