During the last 3 months of pregnancy, antibodies (IgG type) are preferentially passed from the mother, through the placenta, and into the fetal blood supply. These antibodies remain functional in the baby's blood for a few months after birth. These "maternal antibodies" are considered a form of "passive immunity". Explain the concept of passive immunity and why this situation falls into that category. Explain why it is beneficial for the baby to get these antibodies from the mom (be specific). There are four main mechanisms by which antibodies help the rest of the body fight infection. Describe how these mechanisms can protect the baby during its first few months of life.

Step 1
Passive immunity is the transfer of active immunity components, such as antibodies, from one individual to another. In this case, the situation falls into the category of passive immunity because the mother is transferring her IgG antibodies to the baby through Show more…

How can you explain that the same antibodies found in an infant's body immediately after birth are also present in the infant's mother?
Shaiju T.
Anti-B antibodies of a type A mother rarely affect the RBCs of a type B fetus. Yet anti-D antibodies of an Rh- woman sometimes cross the placenta and hemolyze the RBCs of an Rh+ fetus. Explain this difference based on your knowledge of the five immunoglobulin classes.

6. What class of antibody is able to cross the placenta from mother to developing fetus? 7. What type of lymphocyte is responsible for killing virus-infected (or abnormal) cells? 8. Name the three types of antigen-presenting cells (APCs). 9. What must happen before exogenous antigens are presented? a) Enzymes are excreted by the APC to kill the pathogen. b) The pathogen is internalized by the APC & then digested to create peptide antigens. c) They must be combined with MHC class I molecules. d) APCs must activate B-cells. 10. Why does the body mount a cell-mediated immune response? a) to fight intracellular pathogens b) to fight abnormal body cells c) in response to specific endogenous antigens d) all of the above 11. Immunity that is passed from mother to child through the placenta is what type of immunity? a) naturally acquired active immunity b) naturally acquired passive immunity c) artificially acquired active immunity d) artificially acquired passive immunity 12. Which of the following is an example of artificially acquired active immunity? a) receiving an antiserum injection b) receiving an antitoxin injection c) vaccination d) exposure to a pathogen in the environment
