Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are differentiated based on the following traits: Eukaryotic cells contain membrane bound organelles, but prokaryotes do not. Eukaryotes employ DNA as the primary genetic code material, whereas prokaryotes employ RNA for this purpose. Eukaryotes are more complex, making up multicellular organisms as well as single cells classified as cyanobacteria. The diameter of a typical prokaryotic cell is 1-3 μm. Prokaryotes have a single layer plasma membrane, but that of eukaryotes is double-layered.
