Match the antibody classes with the function that best describes the role of that antibody class. This is the major antibody class that protects against the majority of pathogens and is the primary antibody type circulating in the blood. It is also the only antibody type that can cross the placenta, giving passive immunity to the developing fetus. This antibody type is attached to the surface of B cells and acts as the B cell receptor. This antibody type is often the first released, though is not the most common. Because it typically forms a pentamer formation, it is powerful at agglutination (clumping) of pathogens. Found in mucosal areas, such as the respiratory tract, the digestive tract, and the urogenital tract. It is also present in secretions such as saliva, breast milk, and tears. This antibody class tends to bind allergens and also triggers histamine release from mast cells and basophils. It is a key antibody in allergic reactions.
Which one of the following functions/activities is not performed by IgG? A. Binding to the poly Ig receptor. B. Transport out of bloodstream into tissues. C. Binding to bacterial toxin proteins and preventing their binding to target cells. D. Cross-linking C1q. E. Providing passive immunity to the developing fetus.
