Hyperventilation (rapid inhalation and exhalation) can result in respiratory alkalosis (increased blood pH). Why? Rapid breathing depletes the blood of carbon dioxide, thus the blood pH increases. Excess production of carbon dioxide decreases the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen. More metabolic waste is released into the blood, thus reducing the pH. Hyperventilation results in inefficient gas exchange, and not enough oxygen is absorbed by the blood.

Hyperventilation, or overbreathing, is breathing faster or deeper than necessary to meet the body's needs. Hyperventilation reduces the $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$ content of blood, but does not significantly increase the amount of $\mathrm{O}_{2}$ available to tissues. Why might this be so?
