I take 10 net samples from pond A and observe 40 species of plankton. I take 15 net samples from pond B and observe 55 species of plankton. How can I compare richness across the two ponds?
Added by Susana W.
Step 1
- For Pond A: \[ \text{Species richness per net sample} = \frac{\text{Total species observed in Pond A}}{\text{Number of net samples in Pond A}} = \frac{40}{10} = 4 \] - For Pond B: \[ \text{Species richness per net sample} = \frac{\text{Total species Show more…

In the study An Evaluation of the Removal Method for Estimating Benthic Populations and Diversity conducted by Virginia Tech on the Jackson River, 5 different sampling procedures were used to determine the species counts. Twenty samples were selected at random, and each of the 5 sampling procedures was repeated 4 times. The species counts were recorded as follows: $$\begin{array}{ccccc}{\text { Sampling Procedure }} \\\hline & & {\text { Substrate }} \\\text { Deple- } & \text { Modified } & & \text { Removal } & \text { Kick- } \\\text { tion } & \text { Hess } & \text { Surber } &\text { Kicknet } & \text { net } \\\hline 85 & 75 & 31 & 43 & 17 \\55 & 45 & 20 & 21 & 10 \\40 & 35 & 9& 15 & 8 \\77 & 67 & 37 & 27 & 15\end{array}$$ (a) Is there a significant difference in the average species counts for the different sampling procedures? Use a P-value in your conclusion. (b) Use Tukey's test with $\alpha=0.05$ to find which sampling procedures differ.

Comparing Treatments with a Control
we're running an experiment on the effect of abiotic factors (soil salinity and pH) on plant species diversity. we tested at 2 different sites. we had 3 transects and 6 quadrats set up per site and got species richness. for the abiotic factors, we only got 1 soil sample per transect so 3 per site so we can average them. what statistical analysis can we use for the abiotic factors to see if there is a correlation between species richness and each abiotic factor? please explain..
