Instructions Based on the scenario, use the write-in fields to fill-in the correct time values, then use the radio selector to answer the questions. The business is currently unable to process ride-hailing requests or inquiries while the system is down. What is the company's maximum tolerable downtime (MTD)? Hours Two servers are down, and it may take longer to repair one server over the other. What is the mean time to repair (MTTR) the servers? Hours If all servers have been running full-time for 250 hours each, what is the mean time between failures (MTBF)? Hours The database server was found to have a failed drive in the RAID array. There were six drives total. What is the mean time to failure (MTTF) for the failed drive? Hours What is the recovery time objective (RTO) for this incident? Hours The company can only afford to lose a certain amount of data before next day ride scheduling is impacted. What is the recovery point objective (RPO) for this incident? Hours Is the recovery point object (RPO) achievable? Yes No Will recovery efforts surpass MTD, thereby incurring unacceptable losses? Yes No Scenario Reset

This value is typically determined based on the criticality of the business operations that are affected. Since the scenario does not provide a specific number, you would need to infer or decide based on typical business operations. For the sake of an example, Show more…

The single largest source of revenue for Develetech is its online storefront. The storefront is hosted by numerous servers distributed all over the world and services millions of customers in over one hundred countries. On Monday at 9:00 A.M., during routine maintenance, an administrator issued commands through his control console to wipe the hard drives of 3 servers so that they could be updated with new system images. However, the administrator mistyped the commands and actually wiped the entire cluster servicing the storefront. This took the store down for all customers worldwide. Additional important facts about the event include: - The last backups of the storefront servers were performed on Sunday at 9:00 P.M. - The organization previously determined that a loss of transaction data stretching more than 6 hours could seriously complicate the fulfillment process and lead to thousands of angry customers demanding refunds. - All of the servers require a full restart and restoration from the backups before they return to production. The disaster personnel reviewing the damage conclude that this process will take an average of 8 hours for each server. - Multiple servers can undergo recovery at the same time, but due to personnel and network bandwidth limitations, some servers will be unable to undergo the recovery process right away. - Overall, Develetech believes that it can recover the storefront fully in about 2 days. - A prior assessment revealed that Develetech cannot afford to go without the storefront as a revenue source for more than 3 days. Given this information, you'll use various metrics to conduct a BIA.

The mean time between failures (MTBF) is a common metric used to measure the performance of manufacturing systems. MTBF is the elapsed time between failures of a system during normal operations. The failures could be caused by broken machines or computer errors, among other failures. Suppose that the MTBF for a new automated manufacturing system follows an exponential distribution with a mean of 12.8 hours. (a) What is the probability that the automated manufacturing system runs for more than 17 hours without a failure? 0.281 (b) What is the probability that the automated manufacturing system runs for 7 or fewer hours before failure? 0.401 (c) What is the probability that the automated manufacturing system runs for more than 6 hours but less than 11 hours before a failure?

Through a thorough analysis, your company has identified a critical bearing as a source of costly downtime. You have been tasked with identifying an optimal time-based maintenance strategy. Through analysis of previous failures, it has been found that the bearing failure times (in weeks) are Weibull distributed with η = 10 and β = 6. a. The cost of failure has been found to be approximately $17,000, which includes labour, lost production, parts and failures in other components that resulted from the bearing failure. In contrast, the cost of replacing the component prior to failure is $8,000, with most of the savings coming from ensuring proper resources are on hand and prevention of induced failures. Determine the average cost per week of replacing the component every 7 weeks. When computing the expected failures, use (rather large) time steps of one week (Δt = 1). Carry out the computations by hand for this part. b. We would like to use smaller intervals so our analysis is more accurate. As you can imagine, this would be quite tedious if we did this by hand. Using the MATLAB function expected_failures.m posted under Learning Resources on Blackboard, compute the expected number of failures for t_p = 1,2,...,10 weeks using Δt = 0.1 weeks. c. Now that you have the expected number of failures, use your favourite software tool to compute CR(t_p) at Δt = 0.1 week intervals. What is the best PM time? Provide your code or spreadsheet with your answer. d. It turns out that your cost model was wrong. The actual cost of failure turns out to be $20,000. What is the new optimal PM time? (Hint: you need to re-calculate!) e. Using your answers from parts c) and d), determine how much money per week your faulty cost model cost the company. Did you still do better than if you ran the component to failure? Justify your answer.
