Monod equation and chemostats
a. E. Coli is cultivated in continuous culture under aerobic
conditions with a glucose limitation, assuming kd =0. When the
system is operated at D=0.15 h-1 , determine the effluent glucose
concentration assuming So =8 g/L, u m = 0.3 h-1, K s = 150 mg/L,
Yx/s M =0.5 g cells/g glucose.
b. How can you use the chemostat to confirm that um =0.3 h-1
?
c. What is an optimum dilution rate to maximize production of
biomass, and also, the effluent concentration of substrate at this
condition. Assume kd =0 and qp =0.
d. The next phase of your project is to assess the assumption
that k d =0. How would you assess this assumption and what data
would support k d =0? If k d ≠0, what data would support your
claim.
