neurons as the building blocks of the nervous system. That requires an understanding of their anatomy and functionality. The other section is an understanding of the nervous system and its components.

what is the basic structure and function of the nervous system

PART 4. NERVOUS TISSUE Nerve cells, or neurons, are difficult to observe under the microscope since they are very thin and elongated fibers that may reach up to a meter in length. They are the main functional cells of the nervous system. Other support cells are called neuroglial cells, which are more numerous. Nervous tissue functions for communication within the body. This communication requires the initiation, transmission, and interpretation of a nerve impulse. Many neurons are packaged together to form a nerve. Nerves form a network that coordinates every part of the body. The round trip that an impulse makes from the point of origin (such as the tip of your finger) to the central nervous system (spinal cord and brain) and back again is termed the reflex arc.
