1. What, in your opinion, makes Amazon such a special company? Have you used their services and if so, what did you think? 2. Amazon generates a lot of revenue, but what does this mean in terms of their costs? Think about the major costs that Amazon incurs in order to run the company and list them here. 3. In terms of the retail industry structure, what has happened to Amazon's size and power in the retail industry? What is happening to competitors? 4. Do you think Amazon will be a monopoly someday? If yes, what do you think will need to happen for them to get monopoly status? If no, what do you think will need to happen for them not to achieve monopoly status? Hint: Monopoly = the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service.
Akash M.
If monopolies are undesirable, why does government often try to protect sellers against new competitors? Why, for example, does the U.S. government prohibit people from competing with the post office in the delivery of first-class mail?
Explain how the government uses antitrust policies to encourage competition, by making it more difficult for a firm to dominate a market and by curbing restrictive practices. What are some of the problems in implementing antitrust policy and some of the current controversies surrounding it?
