Order is a feature of life, but living things still obey the laws of thermodynamics. This is because ? all of the reactions being performed by the cell are catabolic and spontaneous. ? the small amount of order created in and by living things is insignificant when compared to the amount of disorder in the rest of the universe. ? living things eventually die and then their molecules will become disordered again. ? in metabolic pathways, some energy is converted to heat. This increases the thermal energy of atoms and molecules in the organism's surroundings.

Which of the following statements is true? Choose 1 answer: The organization seen in living cells, tissues, and organs is maintained by a constant input of energy. Living cells cannot violate the second law of thermodynamics when they build large, ordered molecules from smaller, less-ordered starting materials. The net effect of endothermic reactions in an organism and the release of heat into the surroundings is an overall increase in the entropy of the universe. Cell processes that decrease entropy within a living organism cannot occur without an input of energy.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that systems will spontaneously change towards arrangements with greater entropy (disorder). Living systems are so intricately ordered that it seems like they must violate this second law. In simple terms, briefly explain why they don't and how life is compatible with the laws of thermodynamics.

Cells are able to generate and maintain order because change the laws of thermodynamics they take in disorder to generate energy decrease disorder surrounding them they take in energy and release some energy as disorder
