The adenohypophysis (anterior portion of the pituitary gland) has traditionally been called the "master endocrine gland" because so many of its hormonal products regulate the activity of other endocrine glands. Two such hormones are follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) (referred to collectively as gonadotropins), which regulate the function of the gonads (ovaries and testes). Gonadotropins are virtually absent from the blood of prepubertal boys and girls. However, during puberty, the gonadotropic cells are activated, and gonadotropin levels begin to rise, causing the gonads to mature to the adult state.
