Growth hormone acts on cells by stimulating them to produce IGFs (Insulin-like-growth-factors) which activate surface receptors of those same cells to trigger cell division. This is an example of signaling. The male gonad is called a testis and it produces male gametes. The female gonad is the ovaries which produce female gametes. Spermatogenesis is the process of producing male gametes, while oogenesis is the process of producing female gametes. Size, number of granulosa cells, and number of FSH receptors are some of the factors determining which one of the several follicles will "win" while other follicles atrophy and die. The winning follicle will explosively release its oocyte in a process called ovulation. The external female reproductive structures, collectively called the vulva, include the labia majora, labia minora, mons pubis, clitoris, hymen, and Bartholin's glands.

Multiple Choice Review Questions Sexual reproduction involves budding, spore formation, fusion of gametes, and regeneration. The reproductive cell that is produced in the ovum is the zygote. The male gonad is the sperm. Eggs and sperm are similar in that both develop gonads, have adaptations for locomotion, have the same relative amount of cytoplasm surrounding their nuclei, and are produced in approximately the same numbers. Hermaphrodites are organisms that are females with nonfunctioning testes or males with nonfunctioning ovaries. They have functional male and female gonads but are unable to reproduce sexually. As compared with the sperm, the egg contains more cytoplasm and centriole chromosomes.
