Electron transport chain (ETC) forms a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which drives the synthesis of ATP via chemiosmosis. (a) 2,4-dinitrophenol is a type of proton ionophores which function as uncoupling agent. Uncoupling agent disrupt the proton motive force.
