5. Review the section in your lab protocol that describes amylase. Based on what you read, predict the results of the amylase plate test. For each of the following, predict whether it will break down the starch in the plate:
Saliva: Break down
Soaked (germinating) seed: break down
Dry (dormant) seed: won't break down
Boiled seed: won't break down
In this test, is saliva serving as a positive control, or a negative control? Explain.
6. Using the image here, diagram the color changes that occurred after adding iodine, and label what was in each quadrant. Use color (brown or black) to show the location of the starch and the areas where starch was absent. Explain your results thoroughly.
7. Both starch and cellulose are polysaccharides consisting of long chains of glucose, and yet amylase is an enzyme that breaks down only starch. Why can it not break down cellulose? Do a little bit of online research to find out the structural differences between starch and cellulose, address that in your answer, and relate that to enzyme function.
