Short tandem repeats (STRs) in DNA are often used in forensic analysis and for determining paternity. What characteristic of STRs makes them useful for these practices? These sequences are acted upon differently by natural selection in different environments. The sequence of DNA that is repeated varies significantly from individual to individual.
