Homo antecessor, H. heidelbergensis, H. neanderthalensis, H. sapiens Station 1: Homo antecessor No clear fossil evidence for Homo erectus exists in Europe. But there are fragmentary hominin fossils in western Europe back until about 1 million years ago. One of the most interesting of these is the face of juvenile hominin from Gran Dolina, Spain, dated to approximately 780,000 years ago. It was named the type specimen of Homo antecessor. The discoverers claimed that this species shares traits with H. sapiens, and some consider it directly on the line to modern humans. Name two traits that this specimen shares with H. sapiens that differ from the condition in Neanderthals.

Shanidar 1 is the name of the discovery of remains of an elderly Neanderthal in a cave in Iraq. What is one of the special things about this find? His cranium is more robust than modern humans but otherwise identical. His was the only fossil in the cave, indicating he lived an isolated life. The extent of his injuries indicates he may have been cared for by other members of his group. Both of his arms were completely intact.
