Testing the Knee-Jerk Reflex
You will need a reflex hammer and a partner for this exercise.
Have your partner sit on the lab table with their leg hanging loosely. It is important in all these exercises for the test subject to be as relaxed as possible. They should also not watch you do the test. If your partner seems tense, reassure them and gently shake their leg. If they are still too tense, have them count backward from 100 by 3s.
Find the tibial tuberosity (the bump on the tibia, just inferior to the patella). The patellar tendon, which runs from the patella and inserts on the tibial tuberosity, contains the muscle spindles you want to stimulate.
You want to hit your subject between the patella and the tibial tuberosity. If you hit too softly, you won't get a response. If you hit too strongly, you will hurt your partner.
Use the broad end of the hammer to tap on the tendon. Warning: Don't stand directly in front of your partner. Why?
A positive response occurs when the person contracts their quadriceps and the lower leg kicks out. Record the result (either positive or negative) in Table 9-1.
