Rods and cones are photoreceptors that function in vision. Rods are responsible for low-light and peripheral vision, while cones are responsible for high-resolution color vision. Rods do not detect color. The structure of photoreceptor rods includes the pigment rhodopsin, which absorbs light and does not distinguish between different wavelengths of light. Rhodopsin is composed of the protein retinal and the pigment derived from vitamin A. In the dark, retinal is in a bent configuration called cis-retinal. The structure of photoreceptor cones includes the pigment photopsin, which responds to specific wavelengths of light. The transduction of light into electrical signals begins when a photon reaches the outer segment of a photoreceptor. In the absence of stimulation (in the dark), photoreceptor cells react by depolarizing and releasing glutamate onto bipolar cells. In the presence of light, photoreceptor cells react by hyperpolarizing and reducing the release of glutamate. Dark and light adaptation allow for adjustments in the sensitivity of photoreceptor cells to different levels of light. Glutamate plays a role in image processing.

Motion sensitive photoreceptors found in the periphery. Send signals to diffuse bipolar cells. Visual portion of the thalamus; receives messages from M- and P-cells. Specialized cells in the visual cortex that respond to lines oriented in specific ways and moving in specific directions. Specialized cells in the visual cortex that respond to stationary lines of a particular orientation. Ganglion cells that receive information related to color and detail from the midget bipolar cells.
