ATP is the universal energy carrier of cells. Usually, in cells, ATP is hydrolyzed into ADP, releasing molecules and energy. This energy comes from the broken unstable, high-energy bond in phosphate. The energy released is made available for processes such as the synthesis of peptides. This energy is also used in muscles and nerve cells for contractions.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the main energy currency used in cells. ATP hydrolysis is coupled with unfavorable reactions, making the net change in energy for the set of reactions less than zero (favorable). Although ATP is the main energy currency, other molecules can fulfill this role and take part in coupled reactions. Thioesters, notably acetyl-CoA, release free energy upon hydrolysis. Modify the structure of acetyl-CoA to reflect its structure after hydrolysis. Use the eraser tool to delete the bond that is broken. Add H and O atoms where appropriate. Add charges, if needed.
