Filtrate osmolarity increase as it passes through. Active pumping of sodium. Impermeable to water. Impermeable to solutes. Nephron loop. Vasa recta. Active transport of sodium out of the ascending limb. Permeable to only water on descending limb of the loop. Permeable to water and Na+ on both sections of the loop. Increases the osmotic gradient of the kidney medulla. Provides blood supply without altering the osmotic gradient of the renal medulla. Glucose Homeostasis. With increasing incidence and prevalence of Type 2 diabetes additional therapeutic interventions for prevention and treatment are needed. Glucose reabsorption occurs in the proximal convoluted tubule of the nephron by sodium-glucose cotransporters (SGLTs), most prominently the SGLT2 cotransporter. A relatively new class of diabetes drugs, gliflozin, were approved by the FDA for treatment of Type 2 diabetes. These drugs act as sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.
