The nervous system of leeches has been well studied because it is relatively simple with large identifiable neurons. The following observations have been made on the synapse between the sensory P cell and a motorneuron. For each, state whether this is a feature of an electrical or chemical synapse:
a) The synaptic delay was negligible. b) Replacing Ca++ in the saline solution with Mg++ reduced the amplitude of the postsynaptic response, but it did not affect its initial rise. c) Depolarization produced by current injected into the P cell from an intracellular electrode spread to the motor neuron, and if injected into the motor neuron, spread to the P cell. d) How do you think this synapse works?
