The researchers noted that the presence of antibiotic did not affect the rate of gene sharing among bacteria. That is; increasing antibiotic in the environment did not make the bacteria share the resistance genes more/lowering the amount of antibiotic did not make the bacteria stop sharing the genes. Propose one possible hypothesis to explain this observation. That is; why would bacteria share these genetic elements at constant rates?

Why is gene transfer among bacteria significant to human health? Gene transfer among bacteria can lead to uncontrolled growth such that disinfecting surfaces in public spaces is difficult to impossible. Bacteria that participate in gene transfer are much more likely to invade the tissues of other species, including humans, and cause disease. Gene transfer among bacteria that occurs on or in the human body can result in harmful bacterial DNA being taken up by human cells. A gene carrying antibiotic resistance can be transferred among bacteria, decreasing the likelihood that the antibiotic is effective in treating certain diseases. A disease-causing gene can be transferred from a bacterial species into the human gene pool to be passed down through coming generations.

Antibiotic resistance genes are often found on R plasmids (see Natural Gene Transfer and Antibiotic Resistance). A likely source of the R plasmids is bacteria that produce the antibiotic. Why would some bacteria produce antibiotics (chemicals that kill bacteria) and why would they carry R plasmids?
