For Patient #3, the primary purpose for performing the Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT) was for: Option A Checking for sensitization in vivo Option B Checking for sensitization in vitro Option C Checking for unbound antibodies in the patient’s plasma Option D Checking for false positive agglutination on the patient’s rbcs Option E Checking for false negative agglutination on the patient’s rbcs

22. The indirect antiglobulin test, or IAT, is used when testing a woman's blood for antibody to the Rh antigen. 23. The direct antiglobulin test a. measures the amount of antibody in the Rh negative pregnant woman that reacts with the Rh positive fetal red blood cells b. determines whether maternal Rh antibody is already present on (coating) the newborn's red cells c. measures the amount of antibody produced by the fetus against the mother's red blood cells d. uses cross-linking antibodies of the IgD type 24. Release of newly synthesized and preformed mediators from mast cells and basophils are characteristics of type I hypersensitivity. 25. Type IV hypersensitivity is mediated by Th1 cells and CD4+ cytotoxic T cells.

The patient's DAT results are shown in the table. Polyspecific AHG Anti-IgG (check cells 2+) Anti-C3 1. Do the results of the DAT confirm your suspicions? Defend your answer. What additional testing should be performed to confirm the antibody specificity? A "minicold panel" was tested and yielded the following results: SC I SC II Cord 1 Cord 2 Auto 4° C 1. What is the probable specificity of the antibody? 2. What procedures could be performed to avoid the antibody serologic reactivity?

A 21-year-old college student falls off a hotel balcony in Cancun during spring break and suffers significant injury and blood loss. The rescue squad is called, and he is transported via ambulance to the nearest hospital. Because of the severity of the patient's injury, the emergency department must give the student a blood transfusion to combat his acute blood loss. In order to prevent a transfusion reaction, they must determine that the patient does not have preformed antibodies in his system that would bind and react to the transfused red blood cells. So they perform a Coombs test in which the patient's plasma is combined with red blood cells from a potential donor. What is the general term for an assay that tests for binding/clumping of a patient's antibodies with particulates such as red blood cells? A. Phagocytosis assay B. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay C. Proliferation assay D. Agglutination assay
